What are E-Cigarettes?

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that emit vapourised solutions for the user to inhale. These solutions can contain nicotine, or be nicotine-free. It is in this way that cigarette alternatives aim to imitate the sensation of traditional smoking without the actual smoke. (Medical News Today, 2020).

E-cigarettes are otherwise called e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, vapourizer cigarettes, and ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery devices). The number of vapers worldwide has increased from 7 million in 2011 to 35 million in 2016, and to 41 million in 2018 (BBC News, 2019). It is predicted that the number of vapers worldwide will reach 55 million by 2021. (Euromonitor International, 2017).

Just as the market for the e-cigarette industry has increased in recent years, diversity and innovation within e-cigarette products has also developed considerably. The variety of product design means that there is surely an e-cigarette to suit every user. The evolution of the e-cigarette also means that these devices are now more economically and environmentally efficient than ever before: rechargeable batteries has reduced the cost and waste considerably.

An expert independent review concluded that e-cigarettes are “around 95% less harmful than smoking” (PHE, 2015). This is because e-cigarettes contain far fewer potentially harmful ingredients when compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes. Therefore, e-cigarettes are a viable option for those who wish to reduce their tobacco consumption or stop smoking altogether.

“Because e-cigarettes do not burn tobacco or generate smoke, the use of e-cigarettes likely confers a lower overall health risk than does smoking combustible tobacco products. Established combustible tobacco smokers who completely switch to using e-cigarettes therefore would be expected to reduce their tobacco-related health risks.” (National Academies Press, 2018).
